Case Study: Level 3 Ultra-Fast EV Charging Deployment at Calderwood Village
Project Overview
Calderwood Village is a growing mixed-use retail and community hub designed to serve a diverse range of tenants and visitors. To support the increasing adoption of electric vehicles and future-proof the site, Calderwood Village partnered with Future Charging Solutions to deliver high-power public EV charging infrastructure within its main car park.
The project involved the installation of two 150 kW Kempower DC fast chargers, capable of servicing four parking bays, providing reliable, rapid charging for customers, staff, and the wider community. The solution was designed to integrate seamlessly into the existing site while allowing for scalability as EV demand grows..

Kempower chargers are a European-manufactured (Finland) commercial-grade solution designed for public fast-charging applications
Electrical & Power Supply
Power supplied from the existing 630 A EV Distribution Board (EV-DB)
Connection via existing underground conduits (subject to suitability assessment)
Integration with site electrical infrastructure without disruption to other tenants
Communications & Billing
Provision and configuration of Smart Charge public billing software, including the first year of subscription
Supply and installation of 4G data SIMs to each charger for backend communication, monitoring, and billing
Testing, Commissioning & Compliance
Testing and verification carried out in accordance with AS/NZS 3000
Inspection and testing methods aligned with AS/NZS 3017
Full commissioning and operational verification prior to handover
Documentation, Training & Maintenance
Provision of a complete Operation & Maintenance (O&M) Manual
4-hour on-site staff training covering charger operation, safety, and basic fault response
52-week defects liability and maintenance period
Challenges and Solutions
Challenge 1: Site integration within an active retail environment
Solution: With the car park remaining operational, works needed to be carefully staged to minimise disruption. This was achieved through detailed planning, clear communication with stakeholders, and off-peak installation works where possible.
Challenge 2: Power availability and load management
Solution: Delivering high-power DC charging required careful assessment of the existing electrical infrastructure. The final design balanced performance with site capacity, ensuring reliable operation without impacting other tenants.
Key Results:
High-Power DC Fast Charging
Two 150 kW chargers deliver rapid charging suitable for short retail dwell times and high-turnover locations.Multi-Bay Capability
Configuration supports four EV charging bays, maximising utilisation and reducing user wait times.Scalable Modular Design
Kempower’s modular architecture allows future capacity expansion without major electrical or civil upgrades.Public-Ready Solution
Designed for ease of use, high reliability, and compatibility with a wide range of EV models.Commercial-Grade Equipment
Robust hardware and smart power management suitable for continuous operation in a busy retail environment.
Project Outcome
The Calderwood Village EV charging project was successfully delivered with the installation, commissioning, and energisation of two 150 kW Kempower C800 Dual Arm DC fast chargers, configured to supply four dedicated EV charging bays within the main car park.
The charging system was designed and integrated into the existing site electrical infrastructure, with power supplied from the existing 630 A EV Distribution Board (EV-DB). Electrical protection, load allocation, and control strategies were implemented to ensure stable operation within available site capacity while meeting the operational requirements of high-power DC charging.
The installation provides a maximum charging output of up to 150 kW per charger, with dynamic power allocation across connected vehicles. This enables efficient utilisation of available capacity and supports high vehicle throughput during peak operating periods.
Civil and electrical works were completed in accordance with design intent, with charger foundations, conduit routes, and equipment placement coordinated to maintain compliance with manufacturer requirements and applicable Australian Standards. Works were staged to allow the retail precinct to remain operational throughout construction.
All systems were tested, commissioned, and verified in accordance with AS/NZS 3000 and AS/NZS 3017, including inspection of electrical connections, protection settings, earthing, insulation resistance, and functional performance under load. Communication systems and billing interfaces were configured and validated to ensure reliable charger operation, monitoring, and public payment functionality.
The completed installation delivers a compliant, reliable, and scalable DC fast charging asset, capable of supporting current EV demand while allowing for future expansion with minimal additional electrical or civil upgrades.
