Smart Plugs Program for Apartment Buildings
Giving residents affordable access to EV charging at home
Smart plugs deliver Level 1 charging, the same method used by around 40% of Australian EV drivers (Ausgrid, 2023). This makes them a cost-effective alternative to full Level 2 charger installations.
Key information
Status: Open
Grant amount: 50% rebate up to $10,000 per apartment building
Application closes: Until funding is exhausted (first-come, first-served basis)
Completion deadline: 30 June 2026
The Smart Plugs Program supports apartment buildings in Waverley, Woollahra, and Randwick LGAs to install smart plugs — an affordable, simple way for residents to charge electric vehicles (EVs) at home without major infrastructure upgrades.
Smart plugs look like standard power points but include innovative EV charging features such as:
Mobile apps for billing and payment of shared electricity use
Internet connectivity for scheduling and monitoring sessions
Power balancing for constrained circuits
Smart plugs provide Level 1 charging, the same type used by around 40% of Australian EV owners (Ausgrid, 2023). It’s a significantly cheaper option for strata and apartment buildings than Level 2 charging.
