Program Overview

The City of Sydney's green building grants are designed to help apartment buildings cut emissions, lower running costs and prepare for electrification. The funding supports both the investigation stage and the installation stage, so a building can move from "we're not sure what's possible" to a working solution under one application.

The program prioritises projects that:

  • Help apartment buildings save energy, water and waste

  • Support EV charging infrastructure in strata buildings

  • Encourage fully electric strata buildings powered by renewables

  • Increase water efficiency

Who Can Apply:

  • Owners corporations, co-operatives and not-for-profits

  • A strata or building manager can apply on an owners corporation's behalf

  • The building must be in the City of Sydney local government area

  • Buildings must be at least 10 years old for upgrade funding — all buildings are eligible for feasibility studies

What You'll Need To Apply

The council looks for more than a good idea. Have these ready:

  • Owners corporation support — usually a minuted committee resolution to apply

  • A costed scope — what the work involves, what it costs and how long it takes

  • Intent to act on the findings — and enough in the capital works fund to follow through

  • An active ABN — if applying as a business rather than an owners corporation

How Applications Are Assessed

  1. Environmental impact — positive, measurable outcomes for sustainability, such as reduced emissions

  2. Community benefit — inclusive participation, local support, and engagement of priority communities

  3. Capacity and experience — realistic planning, a skilled team, and an achievable timeline and budget

  4. Meets funding priorities — clear alignment with the program priorities

  5. Sustainability — for projects over $25,000, evidence of strong partnerships, risk mitigation and future financial sustainability

Grant amount: Up to $50,000 per building, per year

Application opened: 21 July 2026

Application closes: 1 September 2026

  • November 2026 — Applicants notified of the outcome

  • 1 January 2027 — Funded projects can start

What Is Funded:

100% funding of up to $50,000 per building, per year, covering feasibility work and capital upgrades for apartment buildings in the City of Sydney local government area.

Funding structure:

  • Total funding — up to $50,000 per building, per year

  • Capital works (capex) — up to $10,000 per year for building upgrades, including EV charging infrastructure

  • Project term — up to 3 years of projects under a single application

Example projects:

  • Feasibility studies — EV charging, building electrification, renewable electricity

  • Funding for upgrades — solar PV, EV charging infrastructure and similar works

  • Energy and water audits — including NABERS ratings

And yes — EV charging is included. EV charging feasibility studies and infrastructure upgrades are both named as fundable projects in this round.

Building That's Already Done It

Verve, an apartment complex in Erskineville, used a green building grant to cut its emissions, reduce power costs and prepare the building for electric vehicles. The City of Sydney published their story in July.
