Case Study: EV Charging Backbone - Level 1
Public EV Charging Infrastructure with Integrated Tap-and-Pay Payment System – Heart of Willoughby
Project Overview
Future Charging Solutions was engaged to deliver a public EV charging solution for the Heart of Willoughby mixed-use development at 26 Crabbes Avenue, North Willoughby, NSW. The project involved the supply, installation, commissioning and network integration of five public EV charging ports across two basement levels, providing convenient charging for visitors and the on-site medical centre.
The solution included integrated Tap-and-Pay technology, communications infrastructure, network connectivity and accessibility upgrades to create a reliable, user-friendly charging experience while supporting future growth in EV adoption.
Key Features
Public EV Charging Infrastructure
Installed three Nayax EV Meter Pay chargers, consisting of two 22kW dual-socket chargers and one 22kW single-socket charger, delivering a total of five public charging ports across Basement 01 and Basement 02.
Integrated Tap-and-Pay Payment System
Each charger includes an integrated EFTPOS payment terminal, allowing drivers to simply tap their debit or credit card to begin charging without requiring memberships or mobile applications.
Reliable Network Connectivity
Installed dedicated network infrastructure including commercial-grade network switches and two 4G modems to ensure secure communications between the chargers, payment gateway and remote management platform.
Accessible and Compliant Installation
Relocated existing isolators to compliant, accessible operating heights and installed heavy-duty mounting infrastructure, including pedestal-mounted chargers where wall mounting was not practical, ensuring a safe and user-friendly installation.
Testing, Commissioning and Training
Completed comprehensive testing and commissioning in accordance with Australian Standards, configured the payment system, and provided staff training to ensure the system was fully operational from handover.
Challenges and Solutions
Challenge 1: Fixing Incomplete Work
Some of the basic wiring was started but not finished, and some buildings didn't have the right paths for power or internet cables yet.
Solution: Created a clear, color-coded map to show the builder exactly what was finished and what still needed to be done, ensuring nothing was missed before the final startup.
Challenge 2: Delivering Charging Across Multiple Basement Locations
The chargers were required in different locations across two basement levels, each with different mounting requirements and existing electrical infrastructure.
Solution: Designed individual installation methods for each location, using both wall-mounted and heavy-duty pedestal-mounted chargers while maintaining a consistent, high-quality finish throughout the development.
Challenge 3: Reliable Communications for Cashless Charging
The integrated Tap-and-Pay system required continuous communications between the chargers, payment gateway and management platform.
Solution: Installed dedicated network infrastructure, commercial-grade switches and dual 4G modem connectivity to provide reliable communications and uninterrupted payment processing.
Challenge 4: Missing Pathways for Internet Cables
Some buildings were missing the protective pipes needed to run the internet cables required for "smart" charging.
Solution: We updated our plan to include installing these extra pipes and high-speed data cables, making sure every single charger stays connected to the network.
Project Outcome
Future Charging Solutions successfully delivered a turnkey public EV charging solution for the Heart of Willoughby development. The completed installation provides reliable public charging for residents, visitors and the on-site medical centre, with integrated cashless payments, secure network connectivity and infrastructure designed for long-term operation and ease of maintenance.
